Progress South has asked us to move tonight’s Checkin to the Multipurpose room, which is the “Small” gym.  All the times are the same, just a new location!

*************************************************************************

Saturday January 21nd from 8:00am – Noon is the Pinewood Derby Clinic at the South Middle School Cafeteria. We’ll have the track setup and the boys will be able to test their cars. We’ll also have some experts there to lend a hand if you need some help with the cars. We’ll have weights for the cars that can be purchased from the pack and also some basic tools to help build the cars.

Wednesday January 25th from 6:00pm – 8:00pm we will hold the Inspection and Impound of the cars at Progress South in the North Pod MultiPurpose Room. Please try and show up at the appropriate time to speed up the check in process. We cannot accept any cars after Wednesday and all cars must go through the Inspection process.

6:00 – Tigers and their Parent/Sibling cars

6:30 – Wolfs and their Parent/Sibling cars

7:00 – Bears and their Parent/Sibling cars

7:30 – Webelos I & II and their Parent/Sibling cars

Well it’s that time of year again, and I’m not talking about putting away all the holiday decorations. It’s time to start thinking about Pinewood Derby. I hope many of you got a start on, if not finished, your cars over the break.

This years Pinewood Derby Schedule is as follows:

Saturday January 21nd (8am-12pm) – Derby Clinic at South Middle school cafeteria.  This is a great chance to come use the official scale to weigh the cars and get a few practice runs on the track.

Wednesday January 25th (6pm-8:30pm) – Inspection and Impound.  Times will be announced in the coming weeks.

Saturday January 28th (9am-3pm) – Race day at South Middle school cafeteria.  Times will be announced in the coming weeks.

We’ve had a few people ask for copies of the official Pack PWD rules… Here’s the Link.

We could also use a few volunteers to help with race day duties, please see Matt Inman or email pwd@psepack858.org if you are interested.

Our December pack meeting will be Thursday the 8th. Please don’t forget our Toys for Tots toy drive. Bring an unwrapped new toy to donate to those who are less fortunate this holiday season.

There is also another great opportunity to help out one of our fellow PSE families. The Megathlin Family’s house recently burned down. They lost everything in the fire. Fortunately no one was hurt but this was obviously a tremendous personal loss to the family. I don’t know specifics about clothes sizes, etc. but we do know they need gift cards, etc. to replenish their wardrobe, personal items, etc. If you can help out in any way I know it will be greatly appreciated. You can give the gift cards to Amy or Shiree at the pack meeting. Cash donations will also be accepted.

One last thing – our traditional pie throwing to reward the boys who have sold a lot of popcorn will be done at the December meeting. Any boy who sold $500 or more will get to throw a pie at Kernal Corn – Cheryl McCrary, any boy who sold $750 or more will get to throw one at me and those who sold over $1,000 will get to throw one at our committee chair Mr. Clapsaddle. Tell the boys to get their pie throwing arms warmed up.

This Saturday, November 12th, is our bag drop off for Scouting for Food.  Please meet your den at Progress South at 10:00 AM.  Den leaders should arrive no earlier than 9:30 to get their packets.

Our Fall clean-up day at PSE will be Saturday, November 12th. The activity will occur after the Scouting for Food Bag Drop Off event that day. After dropping off the food bags at the neighboring houses, please rejoin us at school for this clean-up activity. We will be raking leaves out of the front grounds and adding mulch to them.

What to bring:

  • Gloves
  • Rakes
  • Leaf Blower and power cord (if available)
  • Wheel barrows
  • Drink and a snack(we will provide PIZZA after the clean-up)
  • Dress for the weather and possibly getting a little dirty

Each scout who participates in this rewarding activity receives a Service Project Patch for helping their community.

Thanks so much for helping out, we really appreciate it! We look forward to seeing all of you.

I hope everyone is having good luck selling Popcorn this year.  Remember your Popcorn order forms are due to your den leaders on October 26th.  Popcorn will be ready to pickup at your den leaders house on November 12th, please arrange pick up times with them.   Money is then due back to your den leaders on December 6th.   Then den leaders turn in the money for their entire den’s order to Cheryl McCrary.  If you  have any questions please call or email Jamie Barnes or Cheryl

Troop 858 hosts a flag retirement ceremony every year. It is the largest organized flag retirement ceremony in the country. They will retire well over 1,000 flags this year. This is a great event because it teaches the boys respect for the flag and how to properly retire a worn and tattered United States flag. There will be static displays from the fire department, police (possibly SWAT team), military, etc. at the event. You can find more details on the troop’s website: http://www.troop858.org/?page_id=23

The event will be held at T.R. Hughes ball park on Sunday 10/9 beginning at 11:00 with activities and displays being open. The flag retirement ceremony will begin at 1:00 sharp.

Below is a patch that can be purchased at the event.

Boone Trails district Fall Encampment is Oct. 21-23 at Lincoln County fairgrounds near Troy, MO – 1 Fairgrounds Road Troy, MO 63379. Look for signs indicating where to park. This year for the first time packs are welcome to family camp with a host troop. This has never happened before. Our Webelos have always been able to go to district encampments but never the entire pack as a family. All Cub Scouts and family members are welcomed to come. We will be camping with Troop 858 plus two other packs that their boys usually go into the troop.

There will be a lot of activities for all ranks of Cub Scouts – astronomy, archery, BB guns, wrist rockets (sling shots), whittling, chess belt loop, knot tying, monkey bridge, map and compass belt loop, Webelos Outdoorsman activity pin, plus more. There will also be activities for family members to participate in – there will be an Army, police and fire department displays, the Science Center will be there with some cool stuff plus Fredbird.

The cost is $11 per person which includes the encampment registration fee plus food for Saturday and breakfast on Sunday. We need everyone to sign up as soon as possible. We have to submit our count to the Troop by Oct. 1st. You can pay your fees at the next pack meeting on Oct. 13th. More details like schedules, etc. will be posted at a later date. Please fill out the form for every person in your family that is attending. We needs names along with number of people attending. If you are fairly certain you will attend but not 100% please sign up. We need to make sure we have enough space allocated to our camping area to accommodate everyone. This will be a VERY cool event that no one wants to miss!

This is for ALL new Cub Scouts – not just Tigers. This is a great way for all new Cub Scouts to get a taste of what’s to come in Cub Scouts. The event is Saturday Oct 1st from 11:30-6:00. It won’t take that long for your son to go through all the stations. It’s a drop in kind of a thing and you rotate through different stations. No pre-registration is required. More information can be found here: District Tiger Days Flier.

New info – the person in charge of this event sent an e-mail that St. Charles County Parks will be conducting a “Kids Bike Safety and Trail Riding” seminar on Saturday at the park. They are inviting all Cub Scouts to attend. They will be operating from 10:00-2:00. Any child participating in the seminar will need to bring their own bike and helmet. If they participate in the seminar they will have earned their Bicycling belt loop.

Our School Night to Join Scouting event will be help September 8th at 7:00PM in the Progress South Elementary Gym. There will be a presentation for the parents and activities for the kids. For more information please visit the BSA Great St. Louis Council web site
